Proselytizing Among the Heathens
So there’s a lot I wanted to talk about and I might as well start with what happened yesterday. Yesterday I attended a Circuit City meeting meant for store directors, sales managers and installers. Now, my official title at work is Technology Product Specialist, but I also do installations of computers and other services.
Now anyone can tell you that Best Buy is beating the pants off of Circuit City. One of the ways that they are doing that is with their Geek Squad. So CC’s response to that is the IQ Crew. They want to expand their operations in their stores to provide computer repair services to their customers. This is a great area to expand in because any money they make is pure profit. There’s no inventory, the only cost to them is the wages of the techs. So anyhow, this meeting was to set the direction and vision of the IQ Crew for the entire district. And there was a Regional VP there, who said from the beginning that the installers would be the experts at the meeting, and that they’d be asking us many of the questions. I was amazed at how much that I, a new employee of only a month, was able to influence company policy. At the meeting, we decided how to sell the new services for the entire district, and the ideas were mostly from the installers that went to the meeting. On top of that, I am going to be one of three techs who are going to be visiting every single store in the district, eleven of them, and providing validation and training to all of the Product Specialists.
It was later that they weren’t looking for people who were competent and enthusiastic. They wanted evangelists. They wanted people who were enthuiastic and passionate, and who could spread that to others. So I’m going to be one of the first evangelists. Hopefully, this will let me make even more of a name for myself. If nothing else, it’s a great way for me to pick up some hours this week.
I hate it when I have more to talk about but I can’t remember what. In other news, it was interesting to see Kidz Bop right next to KMFDM in the music aisle.

About this whole thing. Remember that you work in retial.
You will work your ass off for nothing. It will get you nowhere. Everyone is replaceable and you only work hard to keep your job.

You know, I realized that. There’s one guy totally manipulating everything, and I’m not going to the other stores anymore. At the end of the day, this is a summer job for me, and I’ll have a real job come next summer. This guy, he’ll be an IQ Crew Tech, and I won’t be. He’s been with the company 7 years. That makes me the winnar.
