Day 9 - Man Then Nature
I don’t have any pictures of the work done today. Mainly because I’m sure you’re all sick of seeing various pictures of holes in the ground. We rented the two man auger from Home Depot again, and finished digging the two holes that we couldn’t before because we had to break up some sections of concrete with a hammer drill.
The only complication today was we had some roots that the auger could not cut through. So because I have longer arms than my dad, I lied flat on the grass and reached in to cut these tree roots with a reciprocating saw.
This first phase of the project is complete. Tomorrow, I’m going to call the township and schedule an inspection of the holes we have dug. We’ve made sure that all of our holes are deeper than they have to be. Most of them are deeper than 40 inches. (The minimum is 36″)
The next step is to put gravel in the holes and put posts in and fill the holes with concrete. As always, I’ll keep you updated.

Does the township actually come out and stick a measuring tape down the hole?
